Tony Rasch is a retired statistician, who, thanks to good tiles and Brow-Raisers, recently won the 2005 Western Canadian Championship Division 2. Prior to that, he was the unofficial Montana SCRABBLE® champion until he was displaced by Ehren Wells, who was better at utilizing Brow-Raisers, than Tony. Aarrghh!

Tony loves entering the monthly puzzles found in the SCRABBLE® newsletter. He fairly consistently places in the top three and has actually won about 20 times.

Tony entered his first SCRABBLE® tournament in Irvine, California in 1997 and won in the novice division. But when he played higher ranking California players, he got thoroughly creamed. He realized that he didn’t have anywhere near the vocabulary to compete at a higher level. He started studying alphabetical lists, but quickly learned that he was not blessed with a mind that could readily absorb alphabetical lists of weird words. That led him to experiment with rearranging lists in ways that helped him to memorize and retain key words. Shortly after learning all of the five-letter J-words, he played RIOJA for 60 points against a 2nd-division player. And she challenged! Wow! What a reinforcement. His next thought was, “Maybe lots of people could benefit from a well-formatted guide to key words.” And thus began Brow-Raisers.

When Tony’s not playing SCRABBLE®, he likes to backpack. He’s walked every step of the way from Mexico to Canada and has walked the 1,300 mile Mormon Trail as well. He has a daughter and two grandsons, who live up in Alaska and he tries to spend a lot of time with them.
